‘Decision Fatigue’

June 19 2020

‘Decision Fatigue’ was coined by social psychologist Roy F. Baumeister and is the emotional and mental strain resulting from a burden of choices.

The decluttering process is driven by decisions, so it’s no wonder that clients become fatigued and their mental energy starts to waiver.

Some classic ‘decision fatigue’ signs that I have come across in the decluttering process when working with clients include:

  • Procrastination – they feel anxious about a task so keep putting it off
  • Avoidance – the decision is difficult to make so they avoid it for as long as possible
  • Indecision – They don’t want to make the wrong decision so they play it safe and do nothing

So how do I help and support my client when they are showing signs of ‘decision fatigue’?

  • We work small areas where decisions are simple and limited
  • We leave difficult decisions aside for when they are ready and feel comfortable to make them
  • We celebrate the wins no matter how small

Decluttering and being organised helps to simplify your life and your decisions so cut the stress and overwhelm and let us know if we, at A Place of Calm, can help you.

In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and…the WORST THING you can do is NOTHING.
